More for less: how to meet the contradictory challenge of 2012

It’s an outlook that has become depressingly repetitive: IT teams must do more for less.  Research from Gartner says that technology departments are expected to deliver on a number of priorities over the next 12 months to help their businesses stay competitive.  However the ongoing squeeze on global spending means that worldwide IT spending will increase just 0.5 per cent in 2012, while European businesses will see a decrease in funding.

According to the research, the key needs of businesses this year - such as driving enterprise growth, customer retention and innovation to deliver competitive advantage - are directly linked to technology.  Of the 2300 CIOs polled, Gartner found priorities around these challenges include analytics and business intelligence, mobile technologies, and cloud computing platforms.
Although funding continues to be tight, Gartner says much can be achieved by understanding that technology is now more than just a business support tool, instead becoming essential for stimulating innovation and preempting the customers future requirements.
Our article here looks at methods for understanding what customers need that don’t require any spending, and ensure that what is ultimately delivered has true business value.  Similarly, we explain how you can get more from your existing service desk investment, again without spending any precious budget.  Clearly, juggling reduced budgets is a difficult proposition.  But by re-evaluating what we spend and making sure that the services we deliver contribute to business challenges, we may find that streamlining is not as difficult as we fear.
