BYOD polices find support with business leaders

Business leaders have become highly receptive to the idea of staff using personally owned mobile devices for work purposes, with research from Trend Micro finding that 77 per cent of organisations have now implemented bring your own device (BYOD) policies.


The downside however is that security and data protection aspects of BYOD have also been developed in an ad-hoc fashion, with 90 per cent of businesses that allow personal devices applying the same principles of security to all equipment used, seeing little difference between company and privately owned technology.  80 per cent of those questioned require staff to install security software before accessing corporate networks without understanding whether this is sufficient.

Finding the delicate balance between allowing BYOD and protecting the business appears to be driven by quickly learnt lessons, with nearly half reporting a data or security breach resulting from personal devices accessing corporate networks.  After these incidents occur, businesses respond in different ways, with just under half restricting data access rights and requiring immediate security software updates, to the extreme case of 12 per cent of businesses revoking BYOD privileges altogether.
